Brief History of the Department
The Department of Physiology is one of the foundation Departments in the College of Medicine of the university; established in 2011 to run both undergraduates and postgraduate programs leading to the award of B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D/MD degrees in Medical Physiology. It also engages in the teaching of Basic Physiology to Medical, Dental, Nursing, Medical Laboratory and Physiotherapy Students.
The Department is located presently in the faculty of Basic Medical Sciences of College of Medicine. It is well equipped with teaching and research laboratories, lecture rooms, staff offices, seminar/conference rooms and departmental library.
The Department is facilitated by full – time, team – spirited, intellectual, proficient and result – oriented members of Academic and Non – Academic (laboratory and Administrative). Among who is Prof. Oyebola D.D.O, Prof Deji Ajayi, the pioneer head of the Department, Prof. Kunle Ajayi and Dr. Adeleye G.S who are the past head of the Department.
The Department is also facilitated by adjunct and sabbatical staff such as Dr. S.A. Onasanwo and Dr. A.F. Ajayi respectively.
The Postgraduate research and training in the department will be devoted to the research units/specialities such as:
- Endocrinology & Metabolism.
- Reproductive and Developmental Programming.
- Neuroscience & Oral Physiology.
- Gastrointestinal and Nutrition Physiology.
- Respiratory and Cardiovascular Physiology.
- Renal and Body Fluids Physiology.
Towards reducing the burden of ill – health in the region, the Department of Physiology of Ekiti State University is committed to teaching, research and training through creation of knowledge that contributes to Nigeria’s aspirations to attain global competitiveness in health care delivery and health education.
